JiJi has traveled to Hong Kong and loves looking at the breathtaking skyline! Hong Kong has over 7.5 million people living in an area that is about 425 square miles. With that many people needing space to live, Hong Kong has lots of tall buildings for apartments. There are some apartment buildings that have more people living in them than there are in small towns in the United States. Even with this solution, living quarters can be tight!
The average amount of living space for someone in New York City is 414 square feet while it is about 160 square feet in Hong Kong. Thinking about the available living space in Hong Kong, a 160 square foot living space might be a 16 foot by 10 foot room. How does that compare to the size of your classroom? What are other dimensions that could create a rectangle with an area of 160 square feet?
Teacher Note: Using grid paper, students could represent 160 square feet living space. How would they decorate the space? You can give them requirements - such as they need to reserve space for a bathroom (around 36 square feet) and kitchenette (around 60 square feet). They could measure objects at home, such as their bed, and determine how much space they would need for it. What other items would be necessary to have in their living space?.
