JiJi has traveled north to reach the United Kingdom and the halfway point of our adventure! JiJi discovered that some of the people who live here have unique houses called narrowboats. A narrowboat is a boat built to fit the narrow canalways and locks found on the waterways of the United Kingdom. Although the boats are often rented for vacations or to spend the day on the water, more than 6000 narrowboats are now registered as permanent residences. narrowboats get their electricity from batteries and have a limited water tank capacity, usually about 500 liters (132 gallons) of water, so the narrowboat lifestyle relies on conservation.
In order to fit through the canal, a narrowboat has to fall within certain dimensions. A narrowboat can be no more than 7 feet (2 meters) wide and 72 feet (22 meters) long.
- What is the area of the average narrowboat?
- How does this compare to the area of your classroom? Your bedroom?
TEACHER NOTE: Ask students to think about how much water they use on an average day. Ask students to keep track of how long they shower, brush their teeth and wash their hands, as well as any other time they use water. Also ask students to record each time they flush the toilet. Then have students explore how much water each of these tasks uses to determine how much water they use most days. Ask students to compare that amount to the amount of water available on a narrowboat (500 L or 132 gallons). Discuss with students how they could conserve water.
