JiJi has arrived at the final destination - like a lot of us, JiJi is excited to reconnect with friends. Some of JiJi's emperor penguin friends live near the Esperanza Base in Antarctica.
Esperanza Base is on Antarctica but is considered to be part of Argentina. Built in 1953, there are about 60 people who live at the base - including 10 families. There is even a school for the children to attend! Because of its remote location, the base relies on 250,000 liters (66,043 gallons) of gas oil each year for heating and power. In 2008, a wind generator was installed.
Did you know that emperor penguins are the largest type of penguin? They grow to be about 48 inches (122 centimeters) tall. How does this compare to your height? Teacher Note: Create a cutout of a penguin that is 48 inches (122 centimeters) tall. Using a post it note, have students mark their height in comparison to the cutout.
